Apparently this is being done as well... not worth pursuing.
Much like how the game show operated, you let people with a song in their head who don't know the tune come to the site and "hum a few bars" into their computer's microphone and leave a recording of the song. Savvy music people can then peruse the queue of hummed tunes and identify the one's they recognize. Some small fee is paid by the original inquirer upon the successful identification of the song, half of which goes to the site and half to the identifying party. There could also be the option to record the audio via phone in the same way that Odeo supports both audio recorded directly via the browser or via phone.
I usually call my brother and hum the song over the phone. It occurred to me there might be a market (there are definitely occasions when I would have paid $5 to know the name of a particular song). Plus it would be fun to occasionally check the queue and try to help identify the songs for confused people.
there are a couple of sites that offer this, with different methods.
here's one: .
oops - address didn't get through...
it's www.musipedia.org.
Some one has all ready programed this for cell phones with a service. You call and pay a small fee, point the phone toward the music and it will not only tell you the tune but all of the info about it as well.
awesome- thanks fellas. this is something i've wanted for a long time and now it's one less thing we have to build ;-)
