The Elevator Pitch

For people who want to increase political accountability the social-network suggested is a web site that allows people to organize and bring heat onto politicians. Unlike status quo our product actually brings quantifiable consequences to politicians.

The Idea

A social network that would allow people to bring quantifiable consequences to politicians for making specific decisions. This is how it works:

1) Every member is validated (soc.sec. number, credit card, etc.)
2) A user creates a cause and becomes a champion for that cause. He says something like "We want politician X to do Y. If he does, we will do C1. If he doesn't, we will do C2. Who's with me?"
3) Other users sign up to support that cause
4) After enough users show their support, the champion (step 2) goes to a politician and says "If you do Y, we will do C1. If you do not do Y, we will do C2. I have [# of validated users] people supporting this cause.
5 - 1) Politician does Y, in which case the champion goes back to the system, says "X did Y, everybody do C1" and everybody does C1 and rejoice.
5 - 2) Politician ignores the pleas and doesn't do anything. In which case the champion posts "X did not do Y! Everybody do C2!" And everybody does C2.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I was hanging out on NewsVine and found out about Grenalow Wilson. For more, please read here: http://nikitab.newsv...applied-to-petitions

Plus I am interested in social networks... got the tech to build it. Anybody interested in joining forces?

Democracy the social networking way!

Makes sense. An official accountability system!

(Expect talks about the ever growing digital divide)

BTW if you're still looking for collaborators I want in on it. Thanks!

Only very important topics would make a sense here. "Change our lane's asphalt" r anything like that won't work, and unfortunately "Pull out of Iraq" doesn't seem to work this days either!

Saj, it would work with ridiculous situations like Grenalow Wilson.

As far as Iraq, one of my fears is actually that it might work, but might backfire resulting in something like a premature pull-out from Iraq, which would be devastating IMHO to the region in the short-term and to everybody in the long-term. Although that's my opinion - if you don't mind, let's not turn this into a political discussion. If you would like to speak about that, let me know on http://nikitab.newsvine.com.

Regardless of what I think on the subject, most people who speak about Iraq can't tell their toes from their elbows. Everybody must have an opinion about everything for some reason: the oil, construction, economy. But you ask them simple questions like "What is the GDP of Iraq?" or "What are the projections for Iraqi oil?" or "What are the main political factions in Iraq and what is the distribution?" and most people just shrug their shoulders. I wrote about that here in several articles: http://nikitab.newsvine.com/iraq

I am hoping that with this system, people who know the subjects will be able to take on causes that would increase transparency and efficiency. For example, let's say an economist takes on a cause and says "According to these numbers, resource allocation should be adjusted in the following way in Iraq in order to improve security because..." And because the economist actually knows what he/she is talking about, they have a chance at getting a considerable following and influencing decisions.

I think the purpose should be to attempt to align socio-economic with political incentives.

Leese, thanks for the support. I created business for this idea.

Apart from the algebra it sounds like an interesting application, especially on the organizational front and also for reaching out to a larger audience.

I didn't mean to discuss politics here NikitaB. I just tried to say that many times what people think is not respected by the politicians. But I know there have been many cases where such impacts have been made.
Even I know a site which was trying to do the same job in another way: http://www.sinceslicebread.com

Goda_light: this is an idea. The other was started as a business. My apologies if I botched this up a bit - new to CH.

Patmania: thanks!

Saj: agreed. The link you gave didn't work. Did you mean http://www.sincesliceDbread.com/ ?

I think this is really good.

If this hasn't been done it needs to be.

Think maybe I'll join you for this.

Great idea... social network to validate causes using certified real people.

I love it!

I like this idea. IT could be set up for local to provincial/state to federal representatives. Organise the masses.

Also, I think I know an organization that could provide seed funding. Let me see if I can get a hold of them.

Anathema,

I looked at the WP project... uhm... may be I am missing something, but the danger in something like that (and applied to Social Petition) is that there will be a large number of naive people who don't have a clue pushing for something that they are unable (or uninterested in) calculating consequences. The reality is extremely complex and brutal and most people don't care enough to research and understand. SocialPetition will need to safeguard against public idiocy as mob mentality is probably the most dangerous and devastating element of our time... Thanks for bringing up this concern.
