The Elevator Pitch

For people who live apart but want to be together the HomeAwayFromHome set-top box is a webcam, microphone, wireless connector & remote control sensor that converts your TV into a webcam. Unlike regular complicated webcams our product is an easy to use, all-in-one unit that brings friends and loved ones together.

The Idea

For those with friends and loved ones away from home who don't want to be apart, the HomeAwayFromHome set-top box can bring you together. Consisting of a web cam, microphone, wireless connector, and remote control sensor, the HomeAwayFromHome connects wirelessly to your PC and converts your TV into a full screen web cam with the click of your remote control. Now you can spend an family evening together even if when you're a thousand miles apart; or you can have a family reunion without the travel. The advantage of the HomeAwayFromHome box is that it puts everything you need for video conferencing into one convenient, easy-to-use device.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I used to live alone and it sucked sometimes.

This product would be targeting users that don't necessarily have or need laptops (grandmothers, housewives, etc). Also it allows users to view things through the (bigscreen) TVs.

I like the idea if it can be made cheaply. Of course there is still the requirement of having a high speed internet connection... if a user doesn't normally use VoIP and web cams, they might also not have high speed access. So there is sort of a catch 22 situation here.

Sounds like something that can be achieved with a PC... Hooking up a web cam (with mic feature) these days is like plugging in the USB, not very costly either. How do you differentiate yourself when a PC can do much more than a TV?
