If we did all the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astonish ourselves.

The Idea

A wikipedia-like web translation portal. Users submit translations for words, phrases, and idioms into *translation blocks* (to/from whichever languages they know). Each *translation block* is moderated for accuracy, by the community, and defined for a number of different contexts. Finally, the site uses clever voodoo to leverage all these user contributions and deliver perfectly natural translations to the end-user.

I thought of this idea when I was...

Most free translation software is horrible, and the good stuff costs big money. Either way, these dictionaries miss all the vernacular (especially contemporary slang) and nuance which gives life to every language. As a student of East Asian languages, most translation software plain pisses me off. Lost in translation, etc. You get the drill. By leveraging the power of internet group-think, we could create a living, organic, universal dictionary which creates super natural and contextual and awesome and beautiful translations. It'd be a boon to language learners, travelers, journalists, and small businesses going global. It would really open up the web too. Money: The site could make money by selling local ads (by country?), by selling the databases to device manufacturers, and by farming "instant-translation" services to large media sites, etc, all while remaining free to the public. How about it?

I like it, but is there a way for the site to make money other than through selling ad space?
