World Atlas, built by the public (like Wikipedia). Mashup of google maps, geographically tagged photos and local 'must see' websites. Click a destination to see photos and get to know the place by visiting local sites. Make money by combining it with pre-existing accomodation sites (e.g., wotif.com). Users submit photos as well as URL"s of sites that best describes their home town. Optional 'destination download' to visitors of wotif.com for a small cost. Download contains links, photos and 'must see destinations'.
trying to get to sleep thinking of how better to use mapping services.
How is this different from the community content on Google Earth?
Coder4Christ - Like anything - it is about presentation and functionality. Google Earth community is fine but ugly, difficult to work out where to find what you want and not focused specifically on highlighting the best-bits of cities around the world. You would not organize an atlas like google earth community.
Could work if done in the right way.
I do have the feeling we would be too late, existing tourist/travel sites and communities are probably playing around with the google maps as we speak.
yeah Julius - you could be right - smaller communities may already be building their local versions.
I am wondering then if there might be a way to aggregate these smaller projects. i.e a meta project. Might be beating a dead horse. Anyway, Ill see what others say and how the rank of the idea goes.
You are suggesting to get really rich by using other peoples databases (google, flick) :)
The mash-up part is cool (google maps / wiki).
One more thing, wikitravel already exists, Jimbo thought about it :)
I think this is really cool if you go the mashup route, but I don't see how you make money on this aside from ads.
how about this for this for revision of idea:
Mashup the following
1) Google maps
2) "must see" database - pick the must see locations in your region
3) geographically tagged photos
4) wotif.com - accomodation deals in the area
Money through: advertising, publications for wotif (like local guides)
??
Check out 43places.com. They aren't exactly what you are talking about, but getting pretty close to it. Plus they are a part of the Robot Co-op and have a lot of integration with their suite of sites.
I meant to remark "Wicked Awesome." Also, you should visit the post "Been There! Global Photo Community" that person also shares your vision.
In beta still, but I think it is what you're talking about.
Got something to say?
