The success of any kind of social epidemic is heavily dependent on the involvement of people with a particular and rare set of social gifts.

The Idea

Web-based software that enables provider to create narrated web-tours. Select the sites for the tour, add narration, choose the order, and tour is created. For example the web2.0 tour would click through key web2.0 sites with a narration about their history, use etc. For the viewer of the tour, tour takes them to the actual websites where they listen to a brief history of the site and what it is used for. They can temporarily pause the tour to investigate the site further, add to their favourites etc. Each tour comes with its own e-book, covering each of the sites in the tour and perhaps some basic instructions re:use of the site Revenue: Creators pay small fee for use of software (much cheaper than screencast software!) Creators re-sell tours on CD-rom/DVD to clients. CH takes portion. Advertising within tour ("see more sites like this") Sites pay to get on major tours (e.g., web2.0 tour) Specialized tours (e.g., shopping) make money through affiliate programs

I thought of this idea when I was...

Inspired by a number of ideas on CH, namely museum tours, beginner guides, social sites. The crux of this idea is that the user can actually interact with the site because they are taken directly to it. Different from screencasts which show only image of site. I see quite a few uses 1) professional tours - e.g., I review the best of the web for psychology 2) fun tours - best of the best social sites 3) shopping tours - creator loads the tour with money, user gets taken to best shopping sites and has money to spend (great gift idea) 4) teaching tours - tours created for schools directing kids to best education sites 5) sign me up tours - tour is pre-loaded with passwords so that user can sign up to sites that their friends are part of. Lots of potential to create really interesting tours - I particularly like the idea of shopping tours.

This is an awesome idea, sort of like Stumble-Upon but much more personalized. Ridiculously simple to the point of "Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?" Those ideas are usually the best.

thanks Cougar. I appreciate the positive feedback. It does seem like an obvious product given the difficulty identifying good sites among all the noise. Experienced web people could put together one of these tours very quickly, based around any topic

Best web design sites
CSS tour
Best online counselling sites
Best online shopping sites (this has further possibilities)

I think if you want to keep current with Web 2.0, it would need to be done online, not through software.

Maurreen: - definitely. In the idea I say "Web-based software" meaning an application that lives entirely online.

Just poked my head into a PMOG (Passively Multiplayer Online Game) at http://bud.com/
"Quests" there look similar to this idea.
