The Idea

The idea is to create a two-side portal to sell target-based high value multimedia publicity delivered to MMS enabled cell phones in exchange of rewards to the recipient. First side: user portal. Cell phone users login and create account with personal details and preferences. More details of them, more rewards. Second side: client portal. Advertisers login and select "target profile" description of campaign recipients from a list of attributes (more attributes, more expensive, but more value for them). Selects number of receivers and uploads MMS message. The service matches "target profiles" with subscriber?s base and sends MMS without revealing user's number or ID to the client. User receives the MMS (with targeted pub) and reward points are credited to its account. Award Points can be exchanged for cell phone credit, CDs,etc. Pyramid style schema will work for users signing in under other users' advice; Users will earn points from refereed users' MMS.

I thought of this idea when I was...

Studing a Masters in Mobile Comunications. Interesting and well designed multimedia publicity delivered to the cell phone handset has a 100% exposure (MMSs are delivered unconditionally), high viral value, easy to use, etc. Evaryone with a MMS enabled cell phone (most of the cell phones are anabled now) is ready to join in and earn points. Users could pay some of the cell phone service with this!

How do you ensure that people don't just delete the MMS? Is there some kind of feedback which goes to the advertisers (e.g. they get an MMS and a survey).

I could see people spending their commute watching an ad and filling in a survey for feedback. That would be a pretty good spin on the web-based version of the same idea. Not sure if it's been done or not.

Why do the people get rewards points just for receiving the MMS?

Shouldn't it be tied to some sort of action? I.E. - get an MMS from McDonalds, go buy a Big Mac and somehow cash in on the points.

People get reward points to incentive users to register and to provide personal information and most important, to accept the delivery of publicity to their cell phones, otherwise, it would be pure and simple MMS-SPAM.

You can contact the user via USSD to request its opinion or get feedback as soon as the message was delivered and viewed. At the end of the multimedia message a USSD link will be present for the user to click on it, stating that the message was viewed, crediting the reward points and starting the feedback process. USSD calls have no cost for the user and are all text based.

In order for this idea to work, a very large database of users ready to receive MMS has to be available to the clients. This database must have users with all sorts of profiles and from several different locations so the clients can chose (and spend more money) a very well defined target profile and locate sufficient receivers on a geographical location they want to concentrate their advertising efforts (Think of:"all people from 21 to 35, into nightlife, clubs, R&B, in the area or close to downtown NY" for a new R&B bar in NY city).

If users get good content (interactive, interesting, etc) and they know every time they receive a MMS they get reward points, they will not unsubscribe and they will be whiling to be part of this without calling it SPAM. As soon as they see reward points coming in, they will invite friends to join in, increasing their own rewards flow.

This whole system is web based with nothing different of any web service other than a HTTP connection to a bulk SMS/MMS gateway.
