The very premise of the site causes it to attract a community made up of smart creative people with very few trolls. The signal-to-noise ratio is extremely high on this site, and that's no small feat on the internet today

The Idea

Flickr + cards = $$$ I get fed up writing Christmas Cards. I also think most of the birthday cards in the shops are rubbish, once you exclude the ones with slushy poems and then you get one with a nice picture but it says "Happy Graduation" inside and you were looking for a birthday card. There are online cards sites but a printed card in the post is more personal. So this idea allows people to build their own cards. Upload a photo or a drawing, enter your own message, scan in your own letter. Build a card online from the content. The site then professionally prints it and posts it and you pay for this. Store all your addresses and contacts online and the system would print and send them automatically. Automatic reminders when it's someone's birthday or anniversary too, it would even send cards when you're away! Cards would also be printed in the country nearest the recipient to cut down on postage and delivery time. Some sites do business cards this way, why not greeting cards?

I thought of this idea when I was...

Thinking wouldn't it be wonderful if I could press a button and have 100 personalised Christmas cards printed and send rather than writing then all manually, queuing up for stamps, scratching around for addresses and so on.

I totally dig this idea! There are many times where I think to myself, "Self, why doesn't this type of card exist? It would be perfect for So-and-So!" It would be very easy to do, easy to use, and the cards would be cheap, that would mean you'd have repeat purchases. Excellent idea!

it is quite unlikely it is not already done.

i think so because cutomflix is there, there are photo printing and mailing services, email -> mail services.

It's not the greatest idea I've heard, but I suppose it might have a market if the site itself proved easy enough to use. However, as for bulk sending, I doubt there's many people who do actually send a lot of cards in a year. I'm sure most people only send 10 at most on occasions like a birthday.

Christmas is of course the main market I suppose but even then, I don't think there would be many people wanting to send more than 10-20 cards. Having said this, if the site was popular enough and had enough paying members, it could still work.

It is a good idea, and maybe the CH approach could do it better. MyCardMaker does have a pretty solid offering in this space.

(a British company that has done it also)

The Bonusprint site doesn't automatically post out the cards to each recipient. One of the things about my scheme is that I can set it up then leave it to run without having to be at home, without having to post cards by a particular date, without having to queue at a post office - it can all be automated once I've set the cards up.

http://www.mycardmaker.com/ isn't the same idea - they post the cards to the author, not to the recipient.

i played around with this idea a long time ago. Upon digging found it done already. At the time Hallmark (or American Greeting) was doing it on their site exactly as proposed.

...too late or just right in time to exchange cards all the way to the bank? =)

US postal service has an online tool that not only lets you make a custom card, but custom stamps and they will also send it!

http://www.moonpig.com lets you create custom cards (and post them to the recipient)
http://www.qoop.com and http://www.zazzle.com both let you create cards from your flickr collections

if the postal service has this then there is no business here

I love the idea, however it's been done (sort of) before. The new spin would be that you send the cards to the recipient and not the author. However, local postal services are doing this nationwide so you must offer quite some more bang for your buck if you want to compete. Don't forget the local postal services have quite lower margins on sending mail than you would have.

I wish you all the best on this idea :)
