The Idea

Myspace/social networking/meetup site for normal people who may or may not have friends or loved ones already in the military overseas to connect with people working in the military. They could exchange contact info, become penpals, etc. This could be a way for people to show their support for the troops (whether they support the actual war effort or not).

I thought of this idea when I was...

Just finished watching Farenheit 9/11 for the first time, and I saw Kathy Griffin's D-List a few weeks ago where she went to entertain the troops in Iraq. I don't have any close friends or loved ones in the military overseas, but I wish there was some way to connect with individuals over there to show support and help them get through their days more easily.

Can't remember the name of the site, but I actually joined it, and it said that due to the number of people vs. soldiers, it may take awhile to find a match...... that was 2 years ago, never got an email back. Sorry....great idea though

Hmm - What if we combined the two ideas. Adopt a travellin soldier as they visit global hot spots. Tour guides to war zones from the people who make it all happin.

I dated a soldier with several peacekeeping tours under his belt. I'm not sure what the situation is for other armed forces, but the Canadian military doesn't get a lot of Internet access when they're abroad. He'd take a laptop and ask for video messages to be sent via DVD rather than online, as he was never sure if he could get the video.

I love the idea, I've worked with WWII veterans and the current forces and I have a lot of respect for soldiers (although I have some choice comments about how our politicians sometimes deploy them), but I think the logistics of delivering any rich media need more work.
