I think web 2.0 and CH are the missing link for ordinary people to contribute meaningfully in the new ways of creating wealth in this so called new economy.Cycko, Feb 2007

It's free! Like love in the sixties!
develop a website free to users where they can enter their personal belongings into a system accompanied by pictures or video of their items. This will be used in the event of an emergency. For instance, my sister’s home caught fire, and her insurance company asked for an inventory of everything she had. If this application was available she could have had pictures/video/descriptions, and values of her personal inventory quickly available for the insurance company.
how would i make money? SELL ADS TO INSURANCE COMPANIES!
The California fires were going on and the news said to be able to claim money for things you need an inventory.
Online backups?
Like http://www.adrive.com/ (and they [currently] don't have ads)
So what makes your idea better/different?
tons of these, hell just sign up for gmail... and use it
I've never heard of anything like this before (i haven't done my research yet though!) Its going to be complicated trying to prove that you owned what you did because people can easily steal photos and/or photoshop expensive items into the pictures. Videos would be better but they can still be edited.
Anyway its a nice little idea and if you sort out the problem i've given it may be an idea worth backing.
My bank offers this service for free.
I use also box.net which is for free the first gigabyte.
Tommy
I don't think you will be able to convince people to post the contents on their homes on the web.
It is just so tedious to put all those items in. Maybe a service for doing it?
A service! Now that's an idea! I'm way to busy (or is it lazy) to take photos of all the stuff i should take photos of. And since those people who HAVE enough 'stuff' that they see fit to document it for insurance purposes are probably busy professional folks. Not that they COULDN'T do it....just that they probably WOULDN'T without your SERVICE. I think the service idea, while more time consuming and labor intensive, might be a better idea.
ditto maddie
Yahoo/Gail have bigger inobox storage nowadays...and yes before i had my first flashdisk, most of my pics and other dos ar ein the inbox or draft instead of bringing diskette etc.
I think this is a good idea -- I've been thinking for a while that I really need to get organized and get an insurance list together. I wonder if this would be a better add-on to a service like mint.com where they are already connecting to your bank/credit card info? If you had this connect to your bank/credit card info then you could tag items + add picture/description as you make new purchases.
Could something like this be sponsored by an insurance company or consortia of companies? That industry has so many losses due to fraud... People with home insurance could earn discounts on their insurance policies by qualifying with enough information provided and/or some measure of authenticity of their possessions.
neat...but how about security from hacker? I do not want to feel I gave away the window key for my list of assets to the would be thief.
If it's DIY, I am not interested...but I do agree that as a service it would be useful.
So let's say you do manage to get your inventory into a DB somewhere, with web access. Imagine then linking out in a number of interesting ways:
- To Ebay if you want to sell an item
- To Craigslist to give something away
- To your tax software (esp for business tax deductions!)
- To your blog if you collect stuff (tagging of things?)
I think the idea has merit at it's root, but needs a bit more depth.
I just caught this on the NYTimes:
