The Idea

Have you ever heard a song on the radio (those of us who still listen) and wondered what it was called for days because the DJ never identified it? "Memory Music" would be a site that contained a program that would capture the user's voice to find the song that is being sought. The user would use a microphone to record his/her voice for a certain length of time, then the program would search an expansive database of music files to find parts of songs that sound similar to the clip provided. The program could also transpose keys for users who aren't musicaly inclined.

I thought of this idea when I was...

This idea has been brewing in my head ever since i got my ipod 2 years ago. I wanted to put every single song ever made into a large database and wanted to utilize this collection in a way that could help others do the same

It already exists in England. You actually play a clip of the song into the your cell phone and the service identifies the song for you. Concurrent thinking at its finest.

There is also a site called songtapper.com where you can tap the beat of a song using your spacebar to identify a song - it's not that reliable but it's a pretty clever idea, and I am sure it could be made better using this type of approach.
