The Idea

Fishermen (inland and sea) can submit their catches and corresponding data (type of fish, location, size, weight, weather conditions, gear used, line, etc...) and images of their catches. Navigation would be by country - region(state/province) - city/town etc... Could have an interactive Flash map of earth to navigate countries, cities etc. There would also be news sections, equipment reviews and ratings, weather reports and forecasts, forums, classifieds, cottage rental listings, outfitter listings, guide listings etc..

I thought of this idea when I was...

Lack of a centralized fishing website, most if not all focus on local or specific category related to fishing

Lots of fishermen out there and no-one else is doing it. Fishermen can be quite secretive about their favourite areas but as there are other topics suggested apart from the maps this shouldn't stop the site being a success

Check out www.fishing.com and www.the-fishing-network.com
Are those slightly similar to what you are talking about?

Ir really could see people using this... is it a ad driven site or a paid membership site?

Fishing in general is more local than global. My opinion.

I made this already for the fishing channel.

What's new, there are a lot of fishing sites.

You can now easily set that up with google where you include the maps and highlight the different spots. Too Vanhees' point, he seems to know several other sites that do this already. Maybe you can ask him and he can share them with you and you can find out how you can do it differently.

I would think that there are more fishermen who would be motivated to post false or misleading information than there are ones motivated to share accurate fishing data.... just my experience with the locals.

The fishing web sites I use purposely tell there members not to post specific locations due to the fact large amounts of people will show up to these spots and ruin them. I would have to agree with them !!!

pople seem to gravitate to sites that focus on local conditions like http://www.bloodydecks.com

Maybe a search spider that can pull customized content from all the sites to create you own fishing "world" news page and allow you to post back to all of the pages through your personal portal.

Great idea on a niche market - has everything for success.

Might be cool to have a trip planner integrated into it to plan your next fishing trip. (Got to spot A on one day, Spot B another day)

Might make a cool Google Earth/maps mashup.
