The Elevator Pitch

For parents of children and teens who want to leverage existing game consoles to reinforce good behavior the edu-controller system is a game controller and supporting infrastructure that allows parents to reinforce good behavior. Unlike standard educational software that attempts to make learning fun our product encourages children/teens to do the hard work and get the ultimate reward, time on the video game console..

The Idea

The product is a device that integrates with home video game consoles (XBOX, Playstation, etc) and allows children to play only for specific amounts of time. This amount of time a child can play is based on an adjustable points based system. Points can be earned by the child or teen as rewards for cleaning a room, getting good grades, or even automated via completing a certain amount of time on an educational game on a PC.
Educational software today is broken in that it attempts to make learning fun. This application leverages the existing console based video game systems and allows them to be leveraged to encourage education.
In Summary this product includes the following:

1. A custom controller for the major video game consoles that includes flash based memory, a configurable timer, and an token interface.

2. Software and cradle for the parent to add time to the child's token as needed.

3. A small electronic token capable of holding credits to interface with items 1 and 2 above.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I was playing new video games and they are so addictive now that I would do almost anything to keep playing at the expense of sleep, eating, etc. This is a powerful tool.

I was also watching as kids argue over who will play next, who has played longer, etc.

I take my children a lot out in the garden, but I now children who are al day in front of pc/game console.
They are addictive.
I'm not sure if you need another device, because they would go to a friends house.
I guess it's up to the parent to help them.

There are already such devices (Softwares) that exist. Just check them out and try to create a differentiator

"I would do almost anything to keep playing at the expense of sleep, eating, etc."

Perhaps some way to limit the length of play in a single sitting would be welcome? It might also solve SOME of the sibling arguments...

You almost need to load a program onto the console itself to restrict access. Kids going to a friends house would be a problem.

I would also like to see XBox achievement points awarded for doing "cool" things in real life, like getting a certain grade point average, scoring a goal at the game, getting your driver's permit or license. I have seen people work tirelessly for hours to earn achievement points....

Why anyone would work for hours to earn silly little points is beyond me... ooh! I hadn't checked my glory points for a while... I am almost to the next mile stone... :)
