Not freeish. Not freesque. It's free!
For artist looking for another venue then the recording company who are willing to distribute their media virtually free the media merchandise is a online repository that offers the media related to that artist for free and makes money by selling merchandise related to that artist to garner revenue.. Unlike traditional music sales our product will offer virtually free media content and merchandise that the customer can purchase for a moderately decent price.
I dont know if the industry is ready for this. But I will propose this anyways.
A website where *drum roll* artists are encouraged to have their full length album be sold for $1
The catch is that the user has to buy merchandise *pertaining to that artist*:
Merchandise Category:
- t-shirt
- coffee mug
- poster
- ipod, cell phone skin,
Let your imagination run loose.
The total value of merchandise that a user would have to purchase should be over 25$ (before taxes and shipping)
Example:
1 Gabriel and Dresden cd = 1 $
1 quot quot mens cotton T-shirt = 20 $
1 quot quot keychain = 4$
total = 25
-Whatever amount of merchandise is sold. 40% goes to the artist.
-Rest would cover the cost the merchandise itself.
-Shipping is paid by the customer offcourse.
This can be implemented for anything from music, to movies and even independant films, documentaries
key is
** keep cost of merchandise down --- resulting in profits **
benefits:
-Fans are happy. they got a cd+all that merchandise for 25/30$
-fans have merchandise in their hands -- something that fans can relate to and express the choic
-Artist makes money + gets free publicity with all that floating merchandise in the market
- business reaps profits
Recording companies take the roll of a farm. paid to act as a factory and not turn the monolith monster that dictate the laws. As they do right now.
-This ties in other ideas:
--dig this track . com-- [a]
--media reincarnation--
--Digify my music-- by digiterata
All of the above have to work in conjunction, for this to work
So:
- Create one website [a], where content is accessible for free based on a *crowd sourced* rating system
- Create another website like this idea suggests, then you have a *media merchandise* conglomerate that comes into service when user is ready to make a purchase pertaining 2 the artist of theirchoice
I wanted to add to this.
Seems like there is a shift towards MP3 in the industry[a]
In that essence there really wont be any protection for all the digital media floating around out there.
Now you really really like an artists music and you already have their music on your pod. We will not get into the nitty gritty of things, how you got that music there. But there is this site and you can buy trademarked stuff there and you know that 40% of all the earnings are going to go to the artist. Wouldn't you wanna go there and get all that stuff:
If a site offered you :
-i- trademarked merchandise pertaining to that artist
-ii- higher bit rate mp3. (better quality)
-iii- even a CD is you wish to have one (I belive the cost of producing a cd ...end to end is less than a dollar in most cases). i.e cost of media and manufacturing

The music industry isn't ready yet, but they will be soon. When they finally realize that their product is no longer recordings of a specific performance, but the artist himself, they will be able to adjust to the new reality of unlimited free distribution by P2P networks.
They still have plenty of Stuff You Can't Download. This ranges from the mass-produced things you mentioned like t-shirts up to premium items like concerts. The profit margins on these can be huge.
So maybe then they will looking for someone to this for them. My guess is that they will go with an existing player like iTunes, but there may be chance for CH to get in early, perhaps starting with indie bands.
thank you for the comment Dennis
Dennis if left to iTunes to distribute all of our digital media, then we are going to see more and more of DRM.
DRM is not what the consumers want. Consumers want to be able to use their media (which they paid for), to be used however and whereever they wish.
The shift is towards MP3
