For all vehicle drivers who have a responsibility to observe the speed limits on our roads, the Dynamic vehicle speed limiter is a innovation that will prevent or warn the driver travelling too fast. Unlike static speed cameras our product actively helps the driver keep to a speed limit, rather than punishing them for breaking it.
Speeding is a problem in the UK that the government spends a lot of time and money trying to publicise the risks of, and reduce. Speed cameras are everywhere you turn, and loathed by a lot of motorists. They are seen as 'cash-cows' for catching speeding motorists and generating revenue rather than for reducing road speed and increasing road safety.
One of the problems with speed cameras is that motorists slow down for the few yards the camera is checking their speed, and then increase their speed once they pass. This can involve heavy breaking in many cases, which actually makes the driving MORE danagerous.
My idea is to use technology to enforce a speed limit rather than prosecute motorists that break it. A transmitter at the road side (maybe inside the speed limit sign) transmits a signal to an incar receiver which then limits the vehicle's speed to the road's limit.
Will it work technically?
Will it work socially?
Is this a problem outside of the UK?
I use the cruise control on my car to help me keep to the speed limits. But this is actually the reverse of what is really needed. The cruise control will prevent me going slower that what I set, but we need something to prevent going faster than a set speed.
I think your goals are noble, but stupidity can't be legislated away. Criminals will still be criminals, bypassing any hardware placed in their vehicle much like people bypass the copyright protections placed in the new DVDs.
I think an on dash gizmo that could notify you of a camera coming would be more effective. That way the driver would be able to slow down in a safer way. I really do not like the idea of technology controlling our free will. Imagine a woman giving birth or dying. Your trying to get her to the hospital really fast. Who cares about a ticket right? Yet the car is only able to go 20 miles an hour through a residential area at 2am in the morning. I would really be angered by that.
I think it's easy to drive a safe speed, for the people who want to.
as an alert to a driver that they are exceeding the speed limit, I give you the thumbs up.
As a speed limiter, no!!! - I think that each driver should take responsibility for their own actions.
Eg: a speed limiter whilst you are overtaking could get you killed!
Technologically it is do-able, but people would find a way to hack (of spoof) roadside transmitters.
It would be way better to have a smart GPS(satellite navigation) based system.
Each section of road would have the speed limit entered into the system, and an alert speed would be based on that entry.
Maintaining the database of roads, and speeds would require this to be a subscription service, but should work out a lot cheaper than even a couple of speeding fines!
In Australia, a speed limiter would have to be integrated into the vehicle electronics (in most cases this invalidates your warranty!!!!)
A smart alert system may be able to integrate into the software on a GPS/sat nav system.
I think most speeders know. I suspect not enough would be willing to pay to give you economies of scale for mass production.
i guess somethin lik a speed cutter should be made mandatory
I've read about it some time ago...
This will be difficult for a private company to crack into.
The UK government intent to introduce pay per mile taxation. This will be done by a black box in your car transmitting your GPS signal.
The logical step would also be bolting on fines to this system. From the GPS data you can fine based on average speed.
It's a great idea, but not a new one. It has been tried I think about
10-15 years ago, but didn't catch on. People don't like have limits forced on them. Imagine if you had to pay speeding fines per/second overlimit?
A better way to go at it would be to approach the car insurance companies - for example to get a 25% reduction in premiums IF you don't speed. Roads could programmed into a system that receives updates via FM subcarrier (like Tomtom does road closure alerts) and associated with GSP data. BTW the above poster suggested using GPS for velocity, however this is not very accurate. Using a speedo-tach would be more accurate.
I agree With Alan_Turing and Maurreen.
This seems like a solution in search of a problem (problem driver?) to me.
My car has a speedometer.
I do not enjoy paying fines for breaking laws.
I watch my car's speedometer, and avoid exceeding posted speeds. This is a *requirement* of properly operating a motor vehicle on public roadways.
Is the above solution alone working for anyone else here? ;-)
Hi Craig.
I like the idea (in fact I've the same idea once, though not submitted here).
The problem is not that people drive to fast, but the fact that they can and so they DO. Take that possibility away and you don’t have to check anymore. There should be a bypass though (imagine your wife is giving birth in your car).

Great Idea!
Keep going!
They all ready have hidden cameras. If you are seeing the camera it is because they want you to see it. I remember most traffic camera enforced areas had blinking lights on the camera to make them even more prominent.
Some people are already making something like this...
Yeah? Where/Who?
I got to agree with Maurreen on this one.
I don't know about the rest of you, but in the US we have a little gadget built in to the car that lets you maintain a set speed. The name escapes me, but I don't see much of a difference between your idea and what already exists in the states.
Got something to say?
