Hello!

The Idea

Even with a small network of friends, it's tough to find answers for all the questions you might have when you move to a new city. Worse yet is trying to find the answers alone. City Smarts acts as knowledge base, providing new comers with information on the best places to eat, shop, and socialize.

Friendster.com + eOpinions.com = CitySmarts

“This has been pitched before!”
Yes, you are absolutely correct. Why am I pitching it again? Because City Smarts has something new to offer; in addition to the “this is the best…” information, City Smarts offers community members to connect with newcomers.

I thought of this idea when I was...

...reading through previous CH submissions (including Best Friend Finder)

If people who presented ideas like this earlier could pm me, we could all work together on a project. =]

I like this -- it's great for newcomers, but also people who are overwhelmed by all the venues offered in a big city.

Thank you! I wanted to make a service everyone could get something out of. Newcomers get information while people familiar with the city gain friends.

I know for a fart that there is a major website that is doing this.

Kevin_Cox: If you provide me with a web address, I would be more than happy to look at it. Keep in mind, there were search engines before Google, but they became the best. =]

The following already gives me what I need for recommendations on shopping, eating, and socializing:

my friends (in person)
the newspaper
CitySearch.com
Facebook.com
Going.com

I will not sign up for another social network so help me God.

Croaky: You have listed 3 sites and have exclaimed that you "will not sign up for another social network so help me God." My question to you is this:
Because YOU won't sign up for another social network, does that mean all other social networks are obsolete?

There are plenty of profitable businesses out there that I will never use, nor have an interest in, but that doesn't mean they are useless/un-needed.

FP,
Croaky is right in a way: I'm also fed up to make accounts everywhere.
You need to be REALLY special to make sign up.
That doe'sn't mean it can't be done.

I would have loved something like this when I moved to Calgary. Instead I relied on plentyoffish and general facebook creeping in order to meet new people and make friends. After 8 months of living her I'm still finding out stuff I wish I had known, and I still need to widen my social network!

It could work with the social networking / account stuff being optional. If much of it was available to non-members on a read-only basis, that might work just fine for the larger audience.

Good local info, current, reliable, is useful & I think this kind of site can be successful.

Agree that Blue's Best Friend Finder could be a good fit.

What other ideas are pointed in this direction? I'm currently working on a similar concept called Neighborwalk. I'd LOVE to talk with others working in this direction.
