Online subscription service that provides all of the liner note info (the Poop) from CDs for MP3"s in a collection. Basically this would be a mash up between IMDB and Pandora/iTunes/Napster, providing cross referenced info from liner notes from albums. For example, a user would not only be able to find out who the bass player on the latest catchy MP3 they just downloaded is, they would then be able to find all of the albums/songs that the bass player has played on, and buy/download other music, get the lyrics to the song, find out who the producer is, etc.. There are several business models this could take: 1) providing things like band personnel, producer info, and technical details for free, restricting things like lyrics and other note info for subscribers (the Pusherman Model); 2) Providing all info for free, advertising supported (The New! Improved! Model); 3) Providing on on-demand, pay-per-download file with all of the info (the iTunes model).
.. after buying an entire album as MP3s, and not being able to find any info on who the musicians were (I knew who the main artist was, but not the band playing with her). OK, so call me a music geek, but the main reason I don"t buy/download more MP3s is that there is no source for liner note info. Particularly as a jazz fan, where traditional ?bands? are not the norm, but guest artists abound, it"s almost impossible to keep track of who"s playing what on a given song, let alone an entire album. Liner notes are essential, you never know who"s going to show up on a given tune. The same sort of thing happens across musical genres, Jane Somebody sings backing vocals on Band A"s CD, and 3 years later, she"s onto a huge career of her own. Without the liner notes, you"d be hard-pressed to find out that info, and you"d be missing out on some (possibly) great work by a favorite artist. Sure there may be licensing issues at first, but this is just the idea stage, right?
All the material you speak of is copyrighted material -- even the lyrics.
Plenty of shady sites with album art are out there --
Record labels are just now considering to begin suing all the lyrics websites --
Also they would worry that such features would promote pirating of music further, as it would provide what little incentive remains to buy the physical album.
You don't have copyright ownership to charge for this information w/o royalty agreements (I mean hey -- if theres enough demand, then that can turn into a possiblity)
OK, OK, I see that this has been done (in some respects) by www.allmusic.com. Although the interface is a bit clunky, the basics of the idea are there.
actually Yahoo apparently is adding lyrics to their service per an announcement today-> http://www.techcrunc...ics-later-today/
i question the viability from a business perspective - is this something you would pay for? there are already 1000 lyric sites out there you'll find when you google the first 5 words of a song and now it seems Yahoo will have them posted legitimately in one place.... i like the idea of tracing individuals the way you suggest IMDB has it setup to see what else a producer worked on but I'm not sure that I would pay for it... also check LivePlasma.com for some of this functionality now with a great interface on it.
