The Idea

Develop an online designated driver system in order to reduce the "drunk driving syndrome".

Some would suscribe (location based) as a user of the system and other ones would as drivers. Obviously the drivers would retain a fee and our system would get a cut.

Implementation should be location based like craiglist but more dynamic like ebay.

I thought of this idea when I was...

Reading the paper yesterday and learning about a young teenager that is crippled for life after an accident.

you are right. However, most of them are longer term drivers....

Exists in different forms at different places. However, a consolidated system is not so bad either.

How do we make sure that we get paid by the driver that picks them up? I guess we could be the middle man that holds the money, but making sure that someone was picked up and should be paid would be hard to manage.

Does this concept assume that the would-be-drunk driver knows ahead of time that s/he is going to get drunk and makes a reservation? Or is the bartender the one who gets online? I'm not sure this idea will address the problem of people who are simply irresponsible or still believe that they can drive safely when they are drunk. I think in some states, the law puts some responsibility on the establishment (bar, restaurant) not to let drunk patrons drive home. Even eBay wouldn't be dynamic enough because this system requires that drivers check their email constantly or check the site constantly. This should be a mobile-based system where you can get a driver through your phone - via text messaging, and drivers get notified and confirm via text messaging. I don't think many bars have internet access much less a computer - but I haven't been to a bar in many years. You could also rely on a volunteer driver system where concerned parents and others can be on standby to drive. The incentive then is clear to all - to save lives, not to make a few bucks. But then you couldn't really make a business out of it ;-)

The would be drunk plans ahead of time. In the US when friends go out, someone is called the designated driver and this person does not drink and driveds everybody back home. This service would allow all of thm to drink at will

Retired people could do it, they never sleep.

Like superavit said: if it hasn't been done in your country go for it, but there are several countries (including The Netherlands) where this has been done.

Can you explain what advantages this has over just calling a taxi? Requires no forward planning, leave when you like, you have some guarantee the driver is competent and not an axe-murderer...

I know these are around regionally. I have seemed a few posted in towns I stayed at during business.

Okay idea, but you already have something similar, as the rest says above..taxi's. Why go through all the trouble of using your site if you can just call/take a cab and pay 2 $ more ?

Maybe try to get it funded as a public health initiative. I would vote to have some of my tax dollars diverted to this program.

I'd go with the scooter like Tergwin said. Just pick up the phone and call. No reservations necessary. Those scooters are small enough to fit in most trunks. A centralized net work could help manage the scooter riders and provide directions when necessary (like a taxi company, but cheaper).

There is actually a company here in the USA. That will send a tow truck to pick up your car and drive you back to your house safely.
