For developers or project managers who need a solution to a problem quickly and efficiently the GetASolution is a solution marketplace that creates a competive environment to deliver solutions. Unlike current freelance sites our product delivers solutions first instead of competing teams..
Create a system where people can enter a problem they are trying to solve and include two sets of test cases. Additionally, they can submit their source or some executables.
Then a solver comes to the page looking for a challenge and maybe some cash. The solver chooses a problem to solve and downloads the test cases for the problem along with any attached source code/executables. There are two sets of test cases, one that resides on the server and one the solver downloads. The one that the solver downloads is to give the person a sense of the problem and eases development. Once the person is satisfied with the code they supply it to the server, which either runs the program directly, inserts the code (if supplied the source), and runs the executables (in the order dictated by the problem-creator).
There will be a number of solvers to each problem and the real reason to come and join is the excitement of solving problems. Additionally, there will be a list of "highest" ranked solvers based on the number/difficulty of problems solved. I am a half-baked algorithm for determining the difficulty and it deals with having the solvers declare what skill level they are and how long they take to complete the puzzle along with a few other factors so that people aren't cheating the system.
After the problem is solved, the problem creator looks at all the solutions and determines which fits best and then pays the person who came up with the solution. All the submitters get points toward their account based on the ranking of solutions the creator gives.
The creator can then either publicly show the solution or keep it private (depending on the license he/she chooses). If the solution is public then it'll be archived in a searchable codebase.
Earlier this year (March - April), I was thinking about creating a company with no employees and just everyone as a consultant. Then I thought of how Digg works and Yahoo! Answers. Then my thoughts shifted into this creation. Later that week I submitted the idea to Y Combinator, who liked it, but rejected me because I was "too young" (I won't even get into this). However, I'm still adamant in pursuing this idea and I have a few ways of expanding idea.
This isn't previously indicated, the site will make money from commissions. The submitter gives an amount the problem is worth we take some percentage.
===========
I want to further my idea to a competition host. Where anyone can host very large programming competitions. This would allow anyone to run, test, and determine a winner from a large submission set. The application would deliver interesting metrics about the program as well.
How does the website make money?
Advertisement?
Paid acounts?
Or do you take an x% of the money which is for the problem solver?
This is an interesting idea. You could certainly do it from a technology standpoint, but how big do you think the market would be for people who have this kind of problem to solve? Getting the coders to solve problems probably wouldn't be difficult especially with the promise of potential payment, but this site would only work for a limited set of problems. In many (most) cases I've dealt with, the client is not willing to publish their business details and problem specs publicly. They want a coder to sign an NDA before they even disclose the details of the problem space. Certainly there are projects where disclosure is no problem, but I think a lot of contract programming would would avoid this kind of forum because it's way too public.
@JeimerBV:
I'm thinking I would take an x%, put up advertisements, and add services later on such as security testing and various other development related services.
@ micco:
Yeah that's one of the difficulties I'm facing, I really just want to get something up and running. I mean I was thinking with sites like getafreelancer and rentacoder more and more people are disclosing their problems online and asking for entire solutions. This would be for smaller projects without exposing all your code.
Well you don't have to expose your code, the program would go in and insert the code where you would like it. The only thing the coder is doing is solving some of your problem and then they could sign an NDA or some other contract you may have. You just have to let them know how to design the program or functions.
@micco:
I wanted to clarify when I say "the program would go in" I mean that when the solver uploads his solution, the server side would go in. Additionally, the solver would receive the client's binaries for test purposes or if the client is too nervous they could provide test cases for just the program/function in question. The binaries/code are only provided if the solver is trying to insert some kind of function/program in the middle of their existing code base and they do not want to or cannot write test cases for their problem.
Might end up being a "do my homework for me" site.
have seen similar ideas posted here at CH
a problem solver site... Im afraid it has limited solutions to offer.
Their are lot's of proffesional sites that do exactly this.

You can earn in some cases 100.000 dollar or more.
Not just 'some cash'.
Tommy
does that mean that this idea is done already?
Could you point me to some sites that are doing what I'm stating?
I'm doing a solution before payment process so its unlike freelancer where you have to choose a team to create a solution. Instead you choose a solution from a team. I'm trying to set this up as a competition site and that would create incentive to "play" and then the prize happens to be cash.
Also, could you link to the previous ideas that are similar.
Sounds like an idea right out of Wikinomics.
I'm not sure if that's a positive comment or an implication of banality. If you could please further clarify how I should differentiate my idea or build on top of a solid foundation.
there has been a few of these ideas on CH
me like this...
I like your thinking process and feel that this is an excellent idea.
