Just about everyone has seen that popular fishtank screensaver with the very realistic 3D fish swimming around... but how about something more lifelike and just better all around? Anyone who has owned a real fishtank knows that fish don't just swim back and forth like brainless robots as in the current crop of fishtank screensavers -- they chase eachother, hide behind rocks, forage around for interesting things to eat, etc, etc. With a crowdsourced development model, there is a very real possibility of coming out with a fishtank screensaver that is head and shoulders above the current offerings and would become one of the most popular and widely sold products .. which seem to be pretty successful. The business model would be a standard desktop/shrinkwrapped software licensing model, possibly offering a free trial. Additional revenue would come through the sale of "virtual fish packs" where the user could download different types of fish through the website.
... watching my fishtank and thinking how much cooler it was than those screensavers.
I like this idea. Especially with the addition of the "fish packs" which need not be limited to just fish, but plants, sand castles and the ubiquitous bubble chest as a residual income as people customize their tank.
I stumbled into a site a couple of months ago that did this; I think this is the site...
