The Idea

Remember that TV show on VH1 where they would overlay little bubbles with fun facts over old-school music videos? I envision a Web 2.0 version of that concept.

Here's how this would work. You could download a plug-in for your music player that would detect the song that is being played. The app would download any relevant pop-ups for that song and display them in cute little bubbles, just like the TV show. As the bubbles appear you have the option to give them a quick 'thumbs-up / thumbs-down' vote, which would increase/decrease the likelyhood of those pop-ups being shown. Also, if you think of a clever fact or witty remark, you'd have an option to submit it to the site through the plug-in. You could add a social aspect to this by showing a little pic of the submitter with the bubble, which you could click on and check out other bubbles they've created.

I thought of this idea when I was...

listening to music in the background and looking for something interesting to view at the same time. I'll usually put up a slideshow of pictures or lately Twittervision, but this would be more interactive and interesting.

I'm thinking it's like a dynamic mojiti. (http://www.mojiti.com ) ...

- advertisers participate in an automated way.
- viewers participate as they watch.

Here is my old idea at CH:
http://www.cambrianh...er/ideas-id/aJ5FnFG/

Here is what someone built... bubbleply.com
http://www.bubbleply...e6-8882-e59d9387c57e

thecougar's idea is certainly different enough to call his own... but I'd like to share that I discussed how such a thing is implemented, and apparently its not that hard. The pop-up need not be implemented in flash, it can be run in javascript and overlaid using browser layers and DHTML.

I'd like to see prop/drop voting taken to the individual bubble lever over a video. Think it'd be a great idea... the kind of interactivity television needs.

How do you plan to make money from this? By displaying ads in the bubbles too? I don't see this as something I would pay for, nor something I would have 1/4 of my screen hijacked for. =[

Thanks, Gordon, I definitely like your idea of applying this concept to a political debate or other live events. Also agree that technically it's pretty straightforward. I spent a little time trying to code this up using Microsoft's new Silverlight technology, it's still a little too beta for me to figure out but it has a lot of potential for this idea.

@Patrick - you wouldn't actually be downloading the show. The bubbles that would appear would be comments that other users submitted for the song that is currently playing.

Oh. So this would be like Youtube, but with music and cool bubbles? If that is the case, please disregard my previous comment. Apologies! <3

Great idea! But those old music video pop-ups had a weird affect on me - I hated them, but at the same time I couldn't stop watching them. I'm not going full points on this one because I don't want to face that emotional scarring again.

This would be fun to play with. People would then email their finished product to their friends, I'm sure. OMG, you've created a monster! (Just kidding).

I liked those popup videos and doh I didn't realize they weren't on TV any more. Like the idea.
