The Idea

looks like Apple just filed a patent on essentially this idea- http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PG01&s1=20070291710&OS=20070291710&RS=20070291710

A mobile application that let's you place your common order at your closest Chipotle restaurant minutes before you get there so you can effectively cut the 45min wait in the lunch line and go directly to the fax pickup counter to get your burrito. Charge a $10/yr subscription for the service and ultimately sell it to Chipotle (a public company) for millions of dollars.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I know this idea sounds silly but Chipotle (McDonald's) would buy it if it worked. I love Chipotle and I hate lines. The inspiration came because I used to have a script I could hit via my Treo that would generate an email to my MyFax account and ultimately fax my order to Chipotle so I could skip the line. Don't laugh- it was usually a 45min wait. This is a huge kludge and now Chipotle has an online service for ordering so this could be integrated much better. As long as you abstracted it right, it could also be made to work with many restaurants and not be confined to just burritos ;-)

as an overall concept of being able to pre-order takeaway from my local restaurant on my mobile - this idea kicks arse!

requires some serious cooperation from restaurants and consumers. Consumers would have to register to ensure system isnt abused.

I feel it is one of those ideas that is really awesome, that would be nightmarish to implement

CON:
What is keeping them from just saying phone in the order. There is nothing you can really do about it then.

I don't think you can copyright that idea, especially since it is public knowledge all ready.

PRO:
I think it would be easy to implement. It would bacicaly be a little wap skript, you can even charge the order to the company via the phone bill so you don't have to pay, just pick it up.

I think I can do it easly, there would be no need to register if the bill was sent to the phone user. It would not be too hard to have an abuse system.

This sounds similar to but sufficiently different from my "makemylunch" idea... perhaps the two could be combined so that you could order your lunch/food and decide whether or not it is delivered to you for extra..

I think selling the preorder system to restaurants would work, but I don't think trying to get paid subscribers would make much money. You should focus on making a system that's valuable for restaurants. And since any restaurant COULD take phone orders if they wanted to, I think that your system would have to do something to make the process of taking preorders a lot easier, and it would need to be abstract enough to sell/license to multiple restaurants.

So: If a restaurant already takes phone orders, how would your preorder system make them more money than the current ordering system?

And if the restaurant doesn't take phone orders (e.g. McDonald's), how would your system allow them to start taking preorders with the staff and equipment they have now? And would taking preorders help them?
