The Idea

Traffic.com appears to be offering this very service now... this idea is not worth pursuing at this point.

Odds are that you drive the same route to work each day. Mapping services like yahoo and google have traffic data integrated. There's a prime opportunity to create an app that integrates with one of the big 2 mapping services and allows you to enter your commute and the typical local times at which you leave. The service would then execute a lookup every 5min during your commute window and send an SMS alert to the mobile phone # you have registered under your account to alert you when it finds a traffic jam on your route. It would ideally send a suggestion for an alternate route to your phone.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I've seen the trafic data displayed. I have a page bookmarked for phoenix called az511.com which is an overview of the freeway speeds for Phoenix. It seems like the personalized alert feature should exist and tie into an SMS gateway so it can provide realtime suggestions for people to avoid traffic blockages. If it works buy me a doughnut.

Nice idea - I don't own a car, so it's not my thing, but it's a good idea. Can they let me know which bus isn't coming??

I haven't checked if this exists but it's a great idea.

looks like this has actually been done-> www.traffic.com "MyTraffic reports"
not sure why they chose to build the route piecemeal via wizard like that. they don't allow you to use a mapping system to specify start and end points which seems like the easiest way to do it.

oh well, valid idea at least...

I dont know if i like the idea of people checking their Cells text, when u are talking on a cell you can look forward. when you read a text you are not watching the road... this service would cause the very accidents it is trying to avoide

Let's hope anybody using this has already hit a traffic snarl up and is stationary, or it wouldn't be safe to check their text messages!
