Cambrian House

Cambrian House is a very interesting idea - crowdsourced software. Their goal is to leverage the wisdom of crowds to both receive as well as filter business ideas, code and creative content.
Ken Yarmosh, Jul 2006

Cambrian House began as a crowdsourcing community using a wisdom of crowds based approach to discover new business and technology ideas. These pages are being kept online as a technology demo to showcase Chaordix™.

The Idea

Instantly make a funny animation or video with your boss's face and share it with your co-workers.

Here is how it would work:
-You upload a picture of your boss.
-You choose the body of a character to stick his head on top of
-You create a little script of events that will happen to him (falls in a hole, gets eaten by a lion, etc)
-You select a soundtrack.
-You add real quotes that will be added to the soundtrack via speech synthesis.
-The character can be part of a game too (for example an interactive voodoo doll).
-The video or flash animation is automatically generated, and you send the link to your co-workers (anonymously if you are chicken)

Works for ex-boyfriend/girlfriend, or for local politician too.

How does this make money ? Ads from jobs websites. Premium charges.

I thought of this idea when I was...

When a friend was telling me about his boss extravagant behavior and how they would make fun of him.

Actually I remember a web site that you could upload a head picture and get it animated on a 3d doll type character.

So I would say it has been done.

For making fun of my boss.... I like my job and I would like to keep it.

@rizal, @moogy: it does not have to be mean, it can just be funny

Besides, it can all be done anonymously.

spend your time finding a better job - than making fun of one you don't like.
it's counter productive

why make animations for fun? this'll only work for chickens. If i want to hammer my boss, i say it on the face.

Why do so hard work in creating animation and then adding sound track to it as well?

Perhaps issue an award to the boss if enough co-workers agree, like the "stick in the mud" award.

I like this idea and think it would work. Imagine a boss firing his employee over something this minor would only prove how much of an insecure idiot he/she would be. People make pranks all the time. You use your judgment before you do, such as do I think my boss has a sense of humor or not? I think you would have a lot of clients. Only the name I don't know about "jinx" hmmm. How about spoofmyboss, humourmyboss, mybossisfunny, funnyboss ?

Good Concept,

A lot of people hate their boss. So it's a good chance to express themselves.

The concept could be extended to a website where people can rant about their workplace events and document the same for others benefit. The Cartoon could be one of the features.

There could be cartoons for expressing disgust/ happiness/ somber momemt/ moments of achievement etc.....

The website could be named http://www.bossitude.com. what do you guys say ?

knowtorious
knowtorious Posted: June 4, 2007, 11:49 am

Brainsphere: that would be similar to "rankmyteacher" or whatever those sites are called. Except that there could be real repercussions. Most employees are "at will." A boss could either use the documented "rants" as fodder for dismissal or for written warnings or such. At least if you are ranting vocally it can be your word against your boss'.

I think the cartoon of your boss doing something stupid is funny, but it ould be too risky legal-wise.

don't limit the appeal by using 'boss' in the name!

thecougar
thecougar Posted: June 13, 2007, 6:23 pm

I actually like keeping the site focused initially on the "make-fun-of-your-boss" niche. Of course it could be expanded out for other purposes, but this would be a differentiator from existing sites.

I think this could be totally fun and even tho it might get old fast - it if goes viral then there's a definitely potential to make some ad revenue.

for implementation it could kinda work something like...

WHY DO PEOPLE HATE THIS IDEA? COME ON lol

this would be great, it would have to be private but still

jill
jill Posted: June 28, 2007, 5:27 pm

The idea of being able to make funny animations using photos of people is good - although I can't believe it's not already available.

The boss angle limits the appeal of this, as is apparent from the comments.

Merman
Merman Posted: June 29, 2007, 12:34 pm

I think Svejk is right...this shouldn't be confined to just bosses. I think the key will be the "ease of use" to create funny scripts. Perhaps some watching of "Last Comic Standing" would give you insight into structuring it in a competition like atmosphere. In effect...have contests to see whose are the funniest stacked up against each other. Good Luck.

I work for an Adolf Hitler clone (personality, not appearance). You could make money on this if you could guarantee privacy!!!

pixelman
pixelman Posted: July 18, 2007, 4:58 pm

I agree with Merman and others that this doesn't have to be mean-spirited or confined to bosses. Although, admittedly, anonymous ridicule may be your killer app ;).

A fabulous version of this is PaloozaHead (http://www.paloozahead.com/) which lets you upload a "head", pick clothes/hair and a dance/video. It then generates a Flash puppet with your head on it that performs to the video. You can post a link to it in MySpace or wherever.

My kids were falling on the floor laughing watching their head puppets do their thing. It would be great to see this idea expanded upon.

jill
jill Posted: July 18, 2007, 8:09 pm

I like what pixelman and Merman & others say - take the meanness out of it and make it more relaxed. Agree with pixelman - the anon ridicule might get 99% of the users but I would build it to be more flexible.

Also have to be careful about privacy and defamation. First, bullying and publicly ridiculing people is just bad. Unfortunately some people don't know where fun ends and hurt begins. That in turn is now leading to lawsuits and discipline in the workplace.

I heard an interview with a teacher who was deeply scarred - depressed, off work - because of cyber-bullying.

I would rather see this app built with fake pictures, not real boss uploads. If you don't buy my decency argument, and I realize many people won't, then consider the liability you may incur as the publisher / co-creator of images which end up being found to have caused injury.

Sorry to rain on the parade - I think that there is a fun app in here, though and that could be a winner.

saigon
saigon Posted: July 18, 2007, 11:13 pm

yeah.i even thought this one is like traveling back on juvenile ways of making fun with the authorities. Perhaps this would have a market but not on the mainstream of adults standard...something for the underground. I dont know. This is just my opinion.

Substitute 'teacher' for 'boss' in this pitch and I think you are closer to the target demographic.

If you like your boss, give them a super hero body and cape and glamorous appeal. If you hate them, make them look even more evil than the real them.
This is a great little idea and deserves support.
Its simple and it has a reasonable revenue source.
I am voting for it.

So ironic, so many "constructive" comments for such a "destructive" activity. As jill said it could be grounds for legal action. If you email this then there's hard evidence because it's stored in a email server somewhere which, for your sakes, hopefully isn't at the company your boss works for because it can be dug up from the archives.
