The Idea

An application for GPS enabled cameraphones:

The application will bring up thumbnails of location tagged pictures from flickr which are within a set radius of your current position allowing you to select any that look interesting and post comments on them, add them as favourites etc.

You can then be guided to the exact location that the photograph was taken by a simple SatNav system.

You can then take your own location tagged pictures and upload them to flickr for others to view.

I thought of this idea when I was...

When I came back from holiday recently I looked on flickr's map to see what photos other people had taken near where I had just been. It occurred to me that if I'd had access to these pictures on my phone while I was away I may have done my sightseeing entirely differently.

Interesting idea Anathema. I think I would use this service although is more as an add-on to Flickr.

An add-on to flickr for sure since it would take a huge marketing effort to create a rival photosharing service. A revenue model would need to be explored too. Maybe location based ads for starters.

Tourist attractions could also submit pictures, maybe that’s an angle.

I think you could sort out the large number of pictures by narrowing down the area and also by ranking them in order of popularity on flickr.

I really like it, anathema. You're the best mobile girl of Cambriam House! :-)

unless you've got a smartphone or blackberry, you'll likely not have much in the way of maps.. post how, by WAP?? most browsers even today are too lame (except the new iPhone from Apple).

There is nothing special about the iPhone. Any recent 3g device is more than capable of uploading and downloading images over CDMA networks. The Nokia N95 say, would be perfect for such an application.

I want a GPS enabled camera without the phone, or else I want a GPS unit with a camera. Just thought I'd mention that. When I travel I take loads of pictures and I love playing with the GPS but the last thing I want to do is talk on the phone ;-)

So please consider us non-phone GPS-addicted photographers as you go forth to conquer the world.

I agree with Moogy, who mentioned Google Earth and Google Maps. I would like the photo collection to be attached to a map / satellite picture, not just cross-referenced by map grid or lat/long numbers.

Love the idea.

Mashing up with Google Earth and Google maps isa good idea. Indeed flickr providessome of this functionality itself. flickrvision.com also shows what can be done.

Ricoh has a range of digital cameras supporting location tagging of pictures:
