Keep on the lookout for novel ideas that others have used successfully. Your idea has to be original only in its adaptation to the problem you're working on.Thomas Edison

Sell various enhancements to one's office chair. Spinners, hydraulics, ground effects, spoilers, racing stripes... there is no limit to the gangsta modifications you could do to an office chair.
The physical manufacture of these items could be done very cheaply overseas. The real opportunity would be in the community-driven portal site that grows around this phenomenon in which people proudly boast their pimped-out chairs and vote for the best one each week. It would spread rapidly amongst the tech community. Just think "Office Space" meets "Fast & Furious."
I got the idea when I saw my friend Sean Corfield's cube at Adobe all decorated w/ various toys and gadgets. I've always thought those expensive "dubs" spinning wheels on cars are ridiculous (hence my username and avatar). But I'm pretty sure people would get competitive when it came to tricking out their chair and office rivals would buy chair enhancements just to trump their best friends. And everyone with an office job has other friends and rivals in an office. This would become a viral phenomenon.
I kind of like this idea. Unfortunately many people wouldnt be able to install their own modifications, many who could wouldn't want to bother, and many of the remained would face opposition from the pointy haired boss in Dilbert.
Its mad enough to take off, just see pimp my snack, but I too fear the dead hadn of "Health and safety" would stop this from reaching its full potential - especially where your office furnature is leased!
It is possible to have a particular Logo as Baseball Team Logo or Soccer Team Logo ?
Do you think it is possible to have any Logo without Trademark probs ? or do you think it is possible to have agreement with the authors of the gadgets ?
WACE is right....
WHy not try Jazz up my hcair instead for more creatives than flash on?
I like it. I couldsee this catching on.
It is strange and beautiful...I like it.
I think it would be more of a novelty, which to me means low cost
definitely a low-priced item, but cost would be fractional and therefore margins=big. we're talking $15 for chrome plastic spinners which cost a dollar to manufacture in china. the other stuff, somewhere around the same price point. and a portal site featuring "chair of the week" as voted by peers.
wace & saigon- not sure i understand your question regarding the logo. if you're refering to trademark conflict w/ MTV and their "Pimp My Ride" show, here's the specific trademark for that-> http://tess2.uspto.g...038;state=lvknrt.2.3
i'm not positive but trademark is industry-specific and that one is clearly for TV.
as far as the concern voiced of THE MAN cracking down on chair mods in companies, everything mentioned so far could be applied non-destructively via the right adhesive or clips. chairs are all different sizes so it would take a bit of research to design parts w/ the maximum applicability.
aside from ridiculous gross margins on the product sales, the advertising ops from having a niche demographic of office type techies w/ money to spend on modifying their chairs... should be a very attractive segment to advertisers.
what other flaws are there with this?

got any images of how a pimped chair would look like.. that would be cool to see
I can't say why I like this idea, but I can see the viral quality of it. I can also see how office mates would be trying to out-do each other in terms of the modifications. I would have to see some examples to really get a feel for how you would pimp a chair!!
This idea is appealing because it's so ridiculous! I mean that as a compliment.
Some examples and pictures would be great.
Needs some flushing out. I can see people pimpin' up their chair but not getting on a social net website to brag about it and show the world. I could be wrong though. Who knew dogster or catster would get off the ground?!!
Also, there would be loads of competition on selling the accessories, especially if they are cheap plastic things coming from China.
I always wanted to build an office style chair, but with motors.
nerds would love to drive it around in their cubicle cages... alas
it rally can't be easily retrofitted, and would be rather pricey - ie 200-300$
I like it. Like any product finding a price point will be critical. Personally I wouldn't use the site but I sure would encourage others!
