Cambrian House is a very interesting idea - crowdsourced software. Their goal is to leverage the wisdom of crowds to both receive as well as filter business ideas, code and creative content.

The Idea

A flash or javascript application on the internet where anyone can write any sort of message he/she wants on a gigantic virtual bathroom stall. The message, typed or drawn with the mouse, will be saved in the program and viewable by anyone at any time over the internet- A massively multiplayer online bathroom. After scribbling a message, the authors can choose to sign their names which can be seen when you hover over their message with your cursor. Because the canvas would be almost infinitely big, a user can search the wall by typing in the authors' names. It would be free and not require registration, and it would be paid for by advertisers who would quickly profit from their investment as hundreds of thousands of people flock to the website to leave messages and search for their friends messages or just read random notes.

I thought of this idea when I was...

I thought of this idea when I was in a bathroom stall reading the messages people left. I wanted to leave my own message, but it seemed rather illegal.

I can't think of any names, but there are tons of websites where one can go and play in a sandbox where all changes are visible by all users. Some of 'em use a paint-like interface, and others get more creative, using, say, magnetic words like you'd find on a fridge.

I like it, but have two concerns:
1. Is this possible technically? Would an infinitely large web page be fast and responsive to navigate and explore?

2. What about vandalism and spam? How would that be handled if no registration is required?

I think this would be a disaster. First of all you'd end up with massive amounts of profanity (like a real bathroom stall), a bunch of stupid gang tags or whatever, and various rights-infringements like peoples' phone numbers, addresses, threats, whatever. I don't think this adds much value to the world.

Wow. I had an idea like this a while back. (When I was in a skeezy stall at a local mall). I hope this gets launched, it's an easy idea to pull off.

Another thought: You have a graphitti pen. You also have a "paint brush" that wipes out the entire wall-- like a janitor undoing all of the graphitti. Maybe the paint brush happens automatically every few hours making the frequent visits important. Maybe advertisers can put up stickers while everyone else has a pen.
I would been keen on talking more about this idea. Start a business (http://www.cambrianhouse.com/business/) and I will sign up as a web developer.
