Hi,

I wont let the cat out the bag yet.
I just wanted to get an idea first of the cost etc etc.

How much would it cost in $ and man hours to build a site like ebay?

I dont want something as elaborate.
Something between ebay and caigslist.

I dont want something too flashy, but it has to have some flash appeal to it.

I would need it to be secure for online shopping too.

Hopefully someone can give me a ball park figure so I can have a rough idea.

Thanks,

Niemer

Depending on functionality and roll-out features, I would guess between $25,000 - $75,000, and between 3-6 months. That would get you a smaller local team, or a design house in India. That does not include the hosting, hardware, technical support, marketing, and pre-production.

That's my ballpark on the cost. Without more information on the poor cat you have stuffed into that bag it is pretty hard for me to say. eBay was originally a simple site for auctions and sales, but it has grown in scope and features over time. That development over the long tail has cost millions of dollars, but they certainly did not start with the full feature set you see on eBay today.

Ok,thats at least a $ figure.

Im going to have to start on a very small scale(like from my house)

I know a very little about web programming.
Could I use th MS program to help me create a basic site?

What software could I use to get going at least?

That depends on the features you are tying to build in and what code language you are using. I use several programs to do most sites. For example I use TopStyle for only CSS.

But, you can hard code everything in a text editor if you go the skills. So, it depends a lot on what you are trying to make.

Building a website is far different than building a web application that is going to be able to scale with your community and user base. It's apples and oranges.

If you just want to start with a basic information site, that's fairly easy to do, and runs around $500 - $2000 depending on size and scope.

Building a web application that can scale, which is what you asked about, is something a lot more complex. It isn't something I recommend you try to home-brew, you'll end up with a broken application and a broken user experience. Once you nail down the features of the site, and a full description of what it is you are trying to do you can get an accurate idea of the costs. You could probably crowdsource out a lot of the work through the CH community, paying in Royalty Points, Rev Share, or Equity.

As to MS whatever, no clue. I typically hand code in a markup editor. ( HTML and CSS, standards compliant ) Haven't used the application Kevin mentions, is that wysiwyg or just a markup editor?

Its totally focused on code markup but there is a browser preview panel and side-by-side IE and FF preview.

One other good things to check out for general web development is notepad2, TSW WebCoder, PHPeclipse, Bluefish, html-kit, Aptana...

One thing I would like to add is first of all you have to decide how big will be your customer base and how soon you are going to implement your idea.

As others have mentioned, if you share your idea, we can crowd source and figure out if it is a web application or just a website.

Once you decide that, then comes the point how complex it is and do you really need to totally customize it or go with a-la-carte solution.

I myself am implementing a solution which needs a customized web application in Java for scalability factor. If you need any help on how to implement it within a strict budget and have it outsourced from India, I can provide you lots of advice.

Hope this helps.
