What are your thoughts on Flash?

I believe I can do a more interactive and engaging presentation in Flash.

Are you looking for a landing page(front page or index page) only or an entire website (and framework) ?

All,

I am starting off by looking for some structure on the landing page. I think the framework is what's indicated by the outlying areas (such as "for the yougest ducks"Wink. I want to make the landing page very engaging and professional looking, yet kid-friendly.

As far as flash - I cannot tell you ... if you send me to some example pages I can give you my opinion.

The contest is about getting the most valuable head start in making a landing page REAL.

Bit of a high title to live up to (I am a hack when it comes to flash, not an expert Wink )... And his name is Steve Wink

I have a little animation for "the youngest ducks" section done. I'll post a link later today. I also have some ideas for how to present some of the jokes (through a game)

My animation may or may not make the final cut. My main goal is to inspire others to do better or improve what is there.

As promised, here is he link. This is an animation for the "For the Youngest Ducks" section. This is just a concept animation, not a polished final product.

I envision this being scaled down and being a part of the front landing page.

I heard someone had problems viewing the link above in IE 6... so use a newer browser for now Wink

EDIT: I just checked with IE 6 and things seem to be fine, so my new advice is to run Windows update once in a while Wink

OK, I had some time to draw this weekend, and posted another little piece of the site.

http://www.spunkysoftware.com/funandgames/35-Fun/56-pun-duck-part-2

Be sure to grab the handles and move the pieces around.

As the article in the link mentioned, I need ideas for wild, crazy or wacky things to include in the joke machine. You think it, I'll make it in flash or static graphics. (I like flash because you can DO stuff with the picture)

Hmm, thank you, I will look into it. Anyone else having problems seeing it? You should see a dial with two handles that you can move as well as some text above and below it.

I get the same issue here ccozad. It doesn't appear on the page. The page seems to keep loading and there seems some kind of flash element in the page, but because it's fully white it's invisible against the white background.

Darn it. Still working out out the bugs in the new site.... I left out a check for the latest flash player. Can't update right now, will have to revisit tonight.

Here is a picture of it.
One piece of the joke machine

And this piece of the joke machine is more "mechanical" I need some help thinking of silly and funny parts for the joke machine.

'Just tried the links in Firefox, Opera and IE7. The pages show up and the animations look great in FF (2.0) and Opera (9.10). IE7, even after an update, looks like it is downloading them without ever finishing. IE7 says I've got the Flash Object add-on and YouTube videos look alright.

Heheh, if only development could be just about functional stuff and not dealing with browser incompatibilities and quirks.

Suggestions for machine:
Plasma Lamp
Windmill Anometer
Parts of a gumball machine
Parts of a pinball machine
Hamster ball/wheel/maze
Wind power generator

Thanks for the info BentoBox. That helps me to narrow my efforts (BTW, anyone used Joomla 1.5 with embedded flash objects?)

Sometimes IE requires different code to get things working. In some situations this can be solved by using conditional comments. Conditional comments are html comment tags between which you can place IE specific code. Browsers will simply ignore such comments, however IE will interpret the code between the comment tags as it is an IE specific feature.
Not sure if this will help with your issue unless it's IE specific, although might come in handy nevertheless.
If it can be avoided to use this, then avoidance is preferred as it's not considered part of the webstandards.

ccozad,

I still never got to see the animations...

Are you going to work on this some more? If not, I'll make the awards within 1 week, and thanks for what you've done so far. If so, I'll consider holding off on awarding anyhing yet.

Thanks,

I won't be working on it. Anyone else? I suppose this one falls into the ether.

If you are still looking to make this happen there is always sites like rent a coder, eLance and guru.com.
