I met with Don last night and we got to chatting and I recommended he read the book Long Tail by Chris Anderson. Since FilmChamp is for indies that indicates a long tail play to me.

If you don't have time to read the entire book, at least read pages 147-149. Here are some points that stuck out for me that I think could be relevant for FilmChamp:

successful Long Tail aggregators need to have both hits and niches

if you just have products at the tail, you find that customers have no idea where to start because everything is unfamiliar to them

you need to offer products at both the Head (hits) and the Tail so customers can start in a world of familiar products then use filters and searching to let them explore into the Tail (niche)

compare MP3.com with iTunes: the problem with MP3.com is that it was only Long Tail
